1. Conclusion: Difficulty is "Easy to Medium". But "Carelessness" is the Biggest Enemy

The driving difficulty in Ishigaki Island is lower compared to complex roads in urban areas, but the difficulty is "Medium" in the sense of "an environment that induces carelessness".

Once you leave the city center, there are no traffic lights at all, and a straight road with good visibility continues, so you tend to speed up too much, or your attention tends to be distracted by the excessively good scenery and interesting things along the way (direct sales shops, unmanned sales, photogenic places). However, even in 2026, the demand for rental cars is high, and driving by unfamiliar tourists and local cars used as daily roads are mixed.

Reason Why Beginners Can Be Assured

Okinawa is famous as a car society traffic jam area, but there is no traffic jam at all in Ishigaki Island. The city area is all one lane on each side or daily roads without a center line. There are no railroad crossings or special intersections. Therefore, if you don't worry about lane changes and just follow the traffic lights, it's normal city driving. However, if you enter an alley, there are many narrow roads and one-way streets, so if you are not confident in driving or navigation, you should not enter.
If you leave the city center, there are no traffic lights, no traffic volume at all, and leisurely roads with wide road widths continue. This is also only one lane on each side and daily roads. You can get used to leisurely driving.

Therefore, "Don't be fascinated by the scenery," "Don't overestimate your smartphone," "When in Rome, do as the Romans do."
If you can keep these three, even beginners can fully enjoy driving. Conversely, "people who are confident in driving" who neglect these tend to fall into unexpected pitfalls.

2. Real Island Situation

Here, we dig deep into the "reality and risks" of the local area that are not written in guidebooks.

1. Commonly known as "Reverse Tailgating"? Super Low-Speed Driving by Island Grandpas and Grandmas

On the island, you often encounter scenes where grandpas and grandmas riding light trucks are running at 20-30 km/h. Locals sometimes call this "reverse tailgating" jokingly, but there is absolutely no malice, just the car is old and they are driving leisurely. It is mainly common near barns and sugar cane fields around the city center.

Countermeasure: If the visibility is good and the road is wide, you can overtake, but don't force it on roads towards the airport where there are many oncoming cars (National Route 390 etc.). Don't get irritated, think of it as "this is island time", and wait prayerfully for them to change course while listening to music in the car. Sometimes people give way. Especially when you are in a hurry on the road to the airport, they appear, so leave early with plenty of time.

2. Beware of "Pro Driving" by Fishermen and Activity Operators

While there are cars running leisurely, fishermen at work and shuttle cars of diving shops run at considerable speed because they know the roads well.

Countermeasure: If a fast car comes from behind, don't compete forcibly, giving way at a place with a wide shoulder is the safest and smartest.

3. The Road to "Hidden Beach" is in Exchange for Car Scratches

"Nameless scenic beaches" seen on SNS. The road leading there is often an unpaved farm road or an animal trail overgrown with vegetation.

Risk: The probability of fine scratches (line scratches) on the body of the rental car by branches is very high.
Criteria for Judgment: If the information is uncertain and you feel "it's narrow" when looking at the entrance, it is an iron rule not to attack easily. If you are charged for repair costs (NOC), your lunch money will be blown away.

4. [Caution] "No Parking Trap" Around Arakawa Falls

"Arakawa Falls" in the Yonehara area is a popular spot, but there are only 3 official parking spaces.

Inside Story: In summer, etc., I often see cases where police come and issue parking tickets while people are playing by parking on the street next to the parking lot just because it is full. You may have an image that parking prohibition is loose outside the city center, but this place is clearly marked. "Because everyone is parking" does not apply. If you really want to play, you can use the parking lot of Yonehara Beach although you have to walk 1km. It's not bad to walk while enjoying the island plants on the way.

5. "Morning Inspection" in Front of the Ferry Terminal

In front of the "Ferry Terminal", which is a ferry landing, police inspections (checkpoints) may be conducted in the morning hours. Please thoroughly enforce basic rules such as wearing seat belts and stopping temporarily.

3. Concrete Steps and Equipment for a Comfortable Trip

To prevent accidents, we have summarized the "demon intersections" which are accident-prone points that should be particularly noted, and things to prepare.

2 "Demon Intersections" You Must Be Alert To

⚠️ End of the Road from Before Furusuto-baru Ruins to Miyara

Location: The road that goes through the Ohama district from the city center, passes in front of the Furusuto-baru Ruins, and goes out to the Miyara area.

Danger: Although the visibility is not bad, there is a lot of traffic and it is known as an accident-prone area. Be especially careful of head-on collisions near the end of the road. Even if the navigation guides this route, please thoroughly decelerate and check left and right.

People staying in the city area and returning rental cars to the airport should be especially careful
While driving impatiently inside because the departure was delayed and the return flight is approaching, you encounter "reverse tailgating driving". Including yourself, more than 5 cars are following behind the leading light truck. After losing time for a while, the light truck turns the corner, and other cars start speeding up all at once. You will approach this intersection at the timing when you are wondering if you can make it in time.
Let's enjoy Ishigaki Island leisurely until the very end with plenty of time and pace so that you don't ruin everything by having an accident at the end.

⚠️ Intersection of Prefectural Road 87 x Prefectural Road 209 (Towards Omoto Tunnel)

Location: Intersection of major roads heading to Omoto Tunnel.

Danger: The intersection itself is on a slope, and visibility is too good on both roads, so both sides think "I can go" and enter, and head-on collisions and rollover accidents often occur.

Countermeasure: Even if it is a priority road, be sure to put your foot on the brake and check left and right before entering. Always turn slowly. The car body swings more than you imagine.

4. "One Rank Higher Way to Enjoy" Knowing This Information

I wrote things that might scare you so far, but the reason I still strongly recommend a rental car is that there is "freedom" and "magnificent view" that more than compensate for the risk.

Especially, the drive course along the sea of Nagura Bay and the Fukai area is one of the best scenic views on the island. The exhilaration of running while feeling the sea breeze with the windows fully open cannot be tasted by bus or taxi.

If you say "I don't want to be exhausted looking for a parking lot" or "I don't want to worry about scratches", choosing a reliable rental car company with generous compensation and smooth dispatch is the shortest way to improve the quality of your trip.

Rather than choosing a tattered car just because it's cheap, why not enjoy the best Ishigaki Island drive with a well-maintained car?
