[4 Local Supermarkets in Ishigaki] Taste the Daily Life of Ishigaki Island. The Story of "Reaching into the Bag"
🔄 Updated: 2026.02.14
📍 Gourmet & Shopping / City Area
The moment you land at the airport, a humid southern breeze strokes your cheeks. The scent of the tide mixed with a faint sweet smell of flowers. It's the moment you realize you've arrived in **Ishigaki Island, Okinawa, Japan**.
Blue seas and scenic cafes are wonderful, but the charm of this island also resides in the "places of daily life" where islanders gather, not just places prepared for tourists. This time, I will guide you to the world of "local supermarkets" that are not even in the corner of guidebooks, but once you step in, you won't be able to escape their deep charm.

1. What is the Supermarket Situation in Ishigaki? Understanding the 3 Genres
Supermarkets in Ishigaki Island are broadly classified into three genres. Understanding this is the first step to enjoying your island trip more deeply.
- National / Okinawa Main Island Chains (Selection ★★★ / Tourism ★★)
"MaxValu", "San-A", "Kanehide", etc. Large parking lots, selection is the same as mainland Japan. There is a sense of security, but less travel emotion.
- ★ Old-fashioned Local Supermarkets (Selection ★★ / Tourism ★★★)
This is what I'm introducing this time. The atmosphere of the Showa era remains strong, functioning as the kitchen of "Shimanchu" (islanders). Handmade deli and unique displays are a treasure trove of "cross-cultural experiences" for tourists.
- Ultra-Deep Individual Stores / Joint Stores (Selection ★ / Tourism ★★★)
Stores that stand alone along the roads of settlements. It takes a little courage to enter, but it is the community itself of that land.
Since you came all the way to Ishigaki Island, go to a "local supermarket" where the rhythm of the island flows, not a supermarket that is everywhere. The moment you open the door, you should become an "island neighbor" rather than a "tourist".
2. Deep Dive into 4 Local Supermarkets
I will introduce 4 recommended stores, mixing information confirmed by visiting the site again and deep stories unique to the local area. All of them are full of island-unique deli and ingredients, so you can enjoy just looking around. Please try them.
1. [Nansei Supermarket] Sashimi and Yakitori Invite You, the Kitchen of Arakawa Area
Located along Route 4 in the Arakawa area in the western part of Ishigaki Island, this supermarket is marked by a signboard with "Nansei Supermarket" written in light blue letters. Once you step in, it is a Showa retro space.
- Fresh Fish Corner: Some sashimi here is purchased from wholesale sashimi shops, so freshness and cheapness are the best. If you are lucky, one of Okinawa's three major high-class fish "Akamachi (Ruby Snapper)" may be sold whole at an affordable price.
- Fragrant Temptation at the Storefront: Few people can resist the smell of yakitori being grilled in front of the store. You will want to stop by and buy snacks.
- Unexpected Sweets Situation: Contrary to the rugged store appearance, the gap where chiffon cakes and baked goods purchased from nearby cafes are lined up next to the cash register is also attractive. "A tough-looking old man buying a delicate cake", such daily life is here.
2. [Chinen Shokai] The Holy Land of "Onisasa" and a Theme Park of B-grade Gourmet
The birthplace of "Onisasa (Onigiri + Sasami Fly)", which became famous nationwide as B-grade gourmet of Ishigaki Island. It is in the Tonoshiro area, and many tourists visit, but its soul is strictly a "local store".
- Substantial Hot Snacks: Onisasa attracts attention, but actually hot snacks other than sasami (chicken tender) are also rich in variety. The mountain of brown fried foods such as fries and croquettes is a masterpiece.
- "Kindness" that there are tongs: Since many tourists use this place, tongs are available. However, observe carefully. Accustomed islanders do not use tongs, but stick their hands in plastic bags and grab directly. This is "Ishigaki Island common practice".
- Eat immediately on the bench in front of the store: There is a bench space in front of the store, and you can stuff your cheeks with freshly bought Onisasa on the spot. There is also a Miyara store, but that is far from the accommodation area and there are no benches. First, please taste the atmosphere of the "originator" at this main store.
3. [Happy Mart Honna] Self-made "Soba" and the Baptism of Bag Hand Grabbing
A hidden gem not well known to tourists, although it is in an easy-to-use location facing the main street in the Okawa area. A long-established store founded in 1953.
- Fun of Self Soba: Soba by size, small (150 yen), medium (300 yen), and large (450 yen), are placed here. From "light eating" when you are a little hungry to a solid meal, it is free.
- Cheaper than "Onisasa"? Onigiri is 100 yen at Chinen Shokai, but 80 yen here. Even combined with fries, it is very reasonable. There are fewer types of fried food, but if you want cost performance, this is it.
- This is Ishigaki Island Style: There are no tongs in the fried food showcase. Put your hand in a plastic bag, turn it over and grab the fried food. If you master this "Ishigaki Island common practice" way of taking, you are also a splendid islander.
- Mysterious 100-yen shop area and Green Turban Shell: For some reason, there is a 100-yen shop area in the store, and "Green Turban Shell Sashimi" rarely lines up in the fresh fish corner. Chaotic selection is the real pleasure of local supermarkets.
4. [Hoshino Shoten] Near 730 Intersection, Savior of City Strolling
A famous store that tourists tend to overlook, even though it is within walking distance from the center of Ishigaki Island, 730 Intersection and Euglena Mall.
- Impact of Huge Chicken: The hot snack chicken is large for the price and has a rich taste. When you are hungry while walking around the city, choosing this instead of convenience store chicken doubles the fun of the trip.
- Maniac Fresh Fish: Rare fish that you rarely see in mainland Japan, such as "Chinuman (Unicornfish)", and seasonal sashimi line up. Ideal for procuring appetizers when drinking in the hotel room.
- There is actually a parking lot: Actually, there is a parking lot with an entrance on the left side of the store, but the mainstream style for locals is to park on the street in front of the store and buy quickly. In the case of a rental car, use the designated parking lot for safety.
3. "Etiquette for Success" Taught by Residents
To enjoy local supermarkets, some "unwritten rules" and preparation are necessary.
- "Cash" is absolutely necessary. No cards or code payments anywhere
Consider the 4 stores introduced this time as basically **"Cash Only"**. It is a strict rule to prepare plenty of coins and 1,000 yen bills.
- "Read the Air" for Parking
- Nansei Supermarket / Chinen Shokai: There is a relatively large space, but the frame lines are thin or the parking method is unique.
- Happy Mart Honna: The front is for light cars only, and the north side is for ordinary cars.
- Hoshino Shoten: The entrance is narrow and difficult to enter. If you are not confident in driving, it is safer to use a nearby coin parking.
- Challenge Fried Food with "Bag Hand Grabbing"
Except for Chinen Shokai, there are often no tongs.
1. Put your hand in a plastic bag.
2. Grab the fried food through the bag.
3. Turn the bag over as it is and wrap it.
If you can do this series of movements smoothly, you might look like a seasoned traveler.
4. Taste Ishigaki with Local Deli, Sashimi, Awamori & Orion
There are more suitable places to eat sashimi and deli bought at local supermarkets than the narrow table in the hotel.
For example, why not stay at a villa, a condominium with a kitchen, or an inn with a terrace overlooking the sea?
At dusk, spread out "sashimi of fish with unknown names", "island deli", and Orion beer obtained at the supermarket. Outside the window is the sky of Ishigaki Island changing color moment by moment.
Course meals at restaurants are good, but eating local ingredients in the local air. This is also a luxury of travel.
Traveling like living while being blown by the wind of Ishigaki Island. If you are looking for such a base for your stay, an inn with good access to the city area and a fully equipped kitchen is recommended.
