The moment you turn off the engine, the world goes silent. All you hear is the sound of the wind and the chirping of insects.
Below you are the city lights of Ishigaki Island, Okinawa, Japan, and above you, an overwhelming starry sky closes in.
While many tourists head to observatories to see the famous emerald sea, the reason to choose this place is "fewer crowds" and "immersion".
Maesedake Observatory is a view spot at an altitude of 191m adjacent to the Ishigaki Island Astronomical Observatory.
The notable point here is that you can see both "urban night views" and "primitive starry skies". The panoramic view overlooking the Southern Gate Bridge and Taketomi Island is magnificent, but compared to the famous Banna Park, there are overwhelmingly fewer people, and silence is maintained.
If you lie down in the spacious parking lot, you can see stars filling your field of vision and shooting stars.
Even when events are held at the Astronomical Observatory, there is almost no impact on this observatory. No one disturbs you, just watching the flowing clouds and the changing colors of the sky. It is a place where such luxurious use of time is allowed.
As someone who knows the area inside out, I want to share information to ensure you don't fail at this spot.
Hearing "mountain road" might make you anxious, but there is no need to worry. The road to the observatory is paved and one-way, so you don't have to worry about oncoming cars. The road is wide, so even large cars like minivans and beginners unfamiliar with driving can handle the steering wheel with peace of mind. There are some ups and downs and fallen leaves, but think of it as a production passing through a wild tropical forest.
I recommend from dusk to night. Topographically, you cannot directly see the sunset sinking into the sea, but the gradation (magic hour) where the sky color changes from purple to azure is breathtakingly beautiful.
The parking lot has space for about 10 cars and is very spacious. Actually, you can enjoy the magnificent view enough from this parking lot without climbing the stairs of the observatory.
The charm is that it is not too touristy, but there are precautions because of that.
