Cool air caresses your skin, and the sound of dripping water echoes from above: *drip, drip*.
Just as your eyes get used to the darkness, a dazzling light suddenly shines ahead.
What lies beyond that light is not an exit, but the "Sea".
The moment the sound of waves echoes in the cave and the scent of the tide tickles your nose, you are wrapped in the excitement of an explorer who has discovered an unknown world.
This time, I will guide you to a place where you can have a particularly mysterious experience among the many spots in **Ishigaki Island, Okinawa, Japan**.
For those who have not visited here yet, let me introduce the basic profile first.
"Sabichi Cave (Ibaruma Sabichi Limestone Cave)" is located in the Ibaruma area of northern Ishigaki Island, created by crustal movements about 370 million years ago.
The decisive difference between this place and other limestone caves is that it is "the only limestone cave in Japan that leads to the sea".
Usually, limestone caves have an image of being deep in the mountains or underground, but here, the end of the cave is directly connected to the beautiful sea of Ibaruma (Pacific Ocean).
Dramatic development from darkness to the sea: The emerald green sea that spreads out the moment you pass through the untouched nature and cave is a breathtaking view that leaves you speechless.
Face as a Power Spot: Inside the cave, there is a "Giant Turtle Rock" and a pond where huge eels live, known as a spot for improving luck.
Artistic Stalactites: The beauty of the formations created by nature over a long period, such as the huge stalactite named "Niagara Falls", is a masterpiece.
If the famous "Ishigaki Island Limestone Cave" in the city is a tourist spot maintained like a theme park, Sabichi Cave is a place to "interact with untouched nature". It's a bit niche ("off the beaten path"), but that's why it's a spot that is deeply engraved in the hearts of visitors.
This is a story not found in guidebooks, just between us.
The reason I recommend Sabichi Cave is that there is a story beyond just "superb view".
"Ishigaki Island Limestone Cave" is also wonderful, but while it is well-paved and easy to walk, it is true that there is a strong element of "touring".
In contrast, Sabichi Cave is "exploration" itself for children because there is a goal of going out to the sea.
Proceeding through the dim path without a light (don't worry, the inside of the cave is bright enough), aiming for the light of the exit. And finally meeting the sea. This process strongly stimulates children's adventurous spirit.
There is "joy of discovery" rather than "just walking". That is the biggest reason why I want to recommend this place especially to families with children.
Actually, this is a secret sacred place among Ayumi Hamasaki fans.
Ayumi Hamasaki's song "Summer Again" music video (MV) uses this limestone cave and the sea beyond it as a filming location.
The summer sunshine and sense of liberation depicted in the MV. You can actually feel that worldview with your skin.
Standing on the beach after passing through the cave, feeling the sea breeze, and searching for "Is that angle here?" might be a way for adults to enjoy it.
Because Sabichi Cave utilizes natural terrain, a little caution is required. I summarized points so you don't panic locally.
The first thing that confuses you upon arrival is the reception. There is no gate like an amusement park.
The building near the entrance/exit of the cave also serves as the reception, so be sure to stop by and pay the fee without passing through.
Purchase is via a cash-only ticket vending machine.
As of February 2026, the fee is 1,200 yen for adults and 600 yen for children.
Once you enter the cave, there are no toilets.
There is a toilet near the entrance (near the reception building), so especially if you enter with children, I strongly recommend finishing it before entering the cave.
Although the path inside the cave is maintained to some extent, it is not barrier-free, with stairs near the entrance and natural unevenness.
Please consider that entering with a wheelchair or stroller is difficult. It is safe to have a baby carrier ready.
As for shoes, sneakers are not necessary. You can walk without problems in sandals, but choose non-slip ones as there are wet places.
There is lighting inside the cave, so smartphone lights are unnecessary. Please keep both hands free and hold hands with your child.
The Ibaruma area where Sabichi Cave is located is about 40 minutes by car from the city center.
Many tourists return to the city immediately after seeing this place, but honestly, it's a waste.
Because the true charm of this area lies in the "silence after tourists leave / before they come".
After enjoying the adventure at Sabichi Cave, why not check in to a nearby inn as it is and spend time as if you were living there?
My recommendation is "Ishigaki Island Sun Green Resort Hotel" located very close to Sabichi Cave.
It is a cottage-type hotel boasting a garden with a vast green lawn (Green Grass).
Overwhelming silence that cannot be tasted in city hotels.
At night, there is almost no artificial light, so you can monopolize the starry sky that seems to pour down overhead.
And the next morning, wake up to the chirping of birds, and take a walk on the lawn wet with morning dew and the beach where no one is.
Such a luxurious time exists here.
To create memories of "I can't forget the wind and light of that place" instead of "I was tired from just moving around".
Please experience the night of Ibaruma.
