The moment you get out of the car, a group of "extreme colors" that draw a strong contrast with the blue sky of Okinawa jumps into your field of vision. If you listen carefully, you can hear the sound of banana leaves swaying in the wind. This is a place full of mysterious energy, born from the collision of the primeval forest of Ishigaki Island, Okinawa, Japan and the explosive creativity of humans.
Fukai area in the northern part of Ishigaki Island. That different space spreads out near the popular "Yonehara Beach".
"Yoneko-yaki Pottery Shisa Garden" is a vast garden handled by a pottery workshop boasting over 30 years of history.

If I were to explain it in one word for those who have not visited yet, this is "a colorful theme park where giant Shisa live".
The Shisa made in the workshop are characterized not by traditional scary faces, but by charming expressions laughing with a grin and vivid colors. This garden is where that worldview was enlarged as it is and released into nature with ponds and streams.
In Ishigaki Island tourism, it is positioned as "the strongest photo spot you can stop by while driving". No admission fee, no reservation required. Stop by casually and receive an overwhelming visual shock. Such ease and strong impact attract many travelers.
Guidebooks tend to write "Instagrammable", but when you actually stand in this place, you feel something like "vitality" that is not just Instagrammable from the atmosphere created by the mountains behind and the creatures of Ishigaki Island.
First of all, you will be overwhelmed by the huge Shisa monument that welcomes you as soon as you enter.
You will involuntarily laugh at its sheer size and eccentric design. When tour buses arrive, it is so popular that a line for commemorative photos forms in front of this, but the power is convincing.
However, the true charm lies ahead from there.
At the feet of the colorful Shisa, subtropical plants such as ponds with lotus flowers and lush banana trees are breathing lively. Artificial objects and nature harmonize mysteriously, and you will fall into the sensation of wandering into a "paradise of Shisa".
If you look closely at the garden, you may see birds unique to Ishigaki Island such as Crested Serpent Eagles and White-breasted Waterhens.
Finding your "favorite Shisa" that matches your wavelength from among the myriad of objects is also one of the pleasures. The sight of travelers and couples searching for their favorite one with their own sensibilities with few words and pressing the shutter with their own composition is a very happy scene.
As a friend who knows the local area well, I will tell you some real advice.
About 30 minutes by car from the city center. The parking lot has a large capacity and you can basically park smoothly. Even as of February 2026, it is a generous facility with free parking and admission.
The paths in the park are mainly gravel and lawn. Wheelchairs and strollers are rattling and difficult to proceed in many places, so we strongly recommend preparing a baby carrier or visiting with comfortable sneakers.
There are gazebos and shade in some places, but basically the sun hits almost the entire surface. The sun in Ishigaki Island is intense. Hats, sunglasses, and drinks are essential. There are vending machines nearby, but it is safe to bring your own.
I also see people walking their dogs. It is a valuable spot where you can enjoy without problems even with pets if you attach a lead.
If you get thirsty or hungry, there are "Yonehara Beach" and "Inafuku Store" within walking distance. Buying ice cream at a local shop and cooling off is also a connoisseur's way to enjoy.
Many tourists look around here for about 30 minutes as a "passing point". However, the Fukai/Yonehara area is a place where nature remains particularly dense in Ishigaki Island.
If you are tired of busy sightseeing just moving around, why not stay in this area?
The silence after tourists leave, the fantastic scenery of Yonehara Beach sunset at evening calm, the starry sky seen in Yonehara far from the city center, these are privileges that only those who stayed can see.
And what is indispensable to enjoy this area freely and to your heart's content is "your own legs".
Since buses are limited, a rental car is essential to take pictures at the Shisa Garden without worrying about time, drink papaya juice, or suddenly go to the nearby beach to watch the sunset.
