[2026 Guide] Can't Buy Taketomi Ferry Tickets on the Day? Local Dad's Guide to Avoiding Trouble & Island Rules for Families

🔄 Updated: 2026.03.01 📍 Taketomi Island
Scenery of Taketomi Island

The highlight of sightseeing in Ishigaki Island, Okinawa, Japan is Taketomi Island, just 15 minutes away by ferry. Red tile roofs, white coral sand roads, and water buffalo carts walking leisurely. Many tourists from Japan and abroad visit this place where the original scenery of Okinawa remains strong.

However, from a parent's perspective, there are invisible hurdles in Taketomi Island such as "few shaded areas," "gravel roads," and "limited infrastructure." As a father of two living in Ishigaki Island who often crosses to Taketomi Island for work, I will share "real on-site strategies" that are not superficial information on the net. Just knowing this should dramatically change your comfort on the island.

1. Absolute Rules at Ishigaki Port Terminal (Ferry, Parking, Luggage)

The journey to Taketomi Island begins at "Ishigaki Port Remote Island Terminal" in the Misaki Town area of Ishigaki City. Please be sure to complete the following preparations before crossing to the island.

Ferry Reservation is "Mandatory"

This is the most important point. Ferries to Taketomi Island are extremely crowded. Even in the winter off-season, popularity concentrates, so it is common that "only flights after noon are available" even if you go to the counter on the day. It is an iron rule to complete the WEB reservation of the boarding ticket as soon as you plan to go to Taketomi Island.

Aim for "Yashima No. 2 Parking Lot"

The No. 1 and No. 2 parking lots in front of the terminal are often full from the morning. Waiting for a vacancy is a waste of time, so if there is a full sign, it is wise to switch destinations immediately and go straight to the spacious and reliable "Yashima No. 2 Parking Lot", although it is a bit of a walk. The 5-minute walk along the harbor will also be a good time to feel the sea breeze typical of Ishigaki Island.

Check Strollers, Secure Diapers

The village of Taketomi Island has fine coral gravel roads. Strollers will rattle quite a bit. Also, there are few things to block the sun, so you will regret taking it. Leave the stroller in the car or check it at the baggage storage (Red Cap, etc.) inside the terminal and go with a baby carrier.

There are no drugstores on the island. If you forget, the "Diaper Vending Machine" (GOO.N pants M/L size, baby wipes) next to the outside of the terminal front entrance in Ishigaki Island is the last resort.

Register Taketomi Town Official LINE

Let's add "Taketomi Town Official LINE" as a friend while waiting for the ship. From the rich menu, you can use the shortest route search for "Toilet Map" and "Free Wi-Fi Access Points" around your current location. You can respond immediately to your child's sudden toilet declaration.

2. Seasickness Measures & How to Spend 15 Minutes to Taketomi

The travel time from Ishigaki Island to Taketomi Island is about 15 minutes.
Although it is short, if you have children or pregnant women who are prone to seasickness, please choose "rear seats of the ship". The front of the ship receives the most wave impact, so the rear has less shaking. On days with good weather, the terrace seats on the 2nd floor are also comfortable with the breeze.

Boarding is possible from 15 minutes before departure. If you want to sit next to each other in a group of 2 or more, the current basic rule is to start lining up 15 minutes before boarding starts (30 minutes before departure time).

3. The Correct Way to Move: Not "Bicycle" but "Bus + Walking"

When arriving at Taketomi Island, many people head for rental bicycles. Bicycles are a good option for couples or adult-only trips, but not recommended for families with children.

The road width in the village is narrow enough for one car to barely pass, and it is an uneven gravel road. Many tourists lose control of the handle, fall, and get injured. Many shops do not accept reservations for bicycles with child seats, and securing inventory is also a gamble.

🚌 The Correct Answer Proposed by the Author: Taketomi Island Transport Route Bus

It circulates from the port to the village, Kondoi Beach, and Kaiji Beach, and it costs 300 yen per person no matter how far you ride. Recently, credit card payments are also supported.

For the outbound trip, you can board the bus waiting for the arrival of the ship as it is. If you ride from a bus stop other than the port (village or beach) on the island, telephone reservation is required by 15 minutes before departure time. Please be careful only here.

Going near the destination by bus and walking slowly while looking at beautiful flowers and houses is the safest and richest way to spend time. Magnificent Deigo trees are planted on the long slope leading from the port to the village entrance, and a wonderful landscape that can only be tasted by walking spreads out.

4. Family-Friendly "Tatami Room" Lunch & Diaper Changing Spots

If you get tired of walking in the village, rest in a cool shop. There are many small restaurants in Taketomi Island, so it is important to know shops with "Tatami rooms (Zashiki)" that are easy for families with children to enter.

Diaper changing sheets are installed at "Yugafu-kan", "Kanifu", and "Ganjuya". Since there are only benches etc. in other places, it is safe to plan a route in combination with the LINE toilet map.

5. How to Enjoy the Beach & "Absolute Manners" to Protect the Island

The "Kondoi Beach" located on the west side is surprisingly shallow and the waves are calm. If you aim for the timing of the ebb tide, a phantom sandbar appears offshore, and you can reach it even with children's feet.
"Kaiji Beach" slightly to the south is a classic for searching for star sand. The trick is to press the palm of your hand strongly against the sand and look for it from the sand grains attached. Bring a small ziplock bag for taking home. Even if you can't find it, you can buy it at the shop.

⚠️ Absolute Rules to Protect the Island

Showers and changing areas are fully equipped at Kondoi Beach. Taketomi Island values public morals very much. It is strictly prohibited to walk in the village in revealing swimwear or shirtless, or to enter shops or return ferries while wet. It is no problem to come wearing a swimsuit from the hotel room, but be sure to change into dry clothes before moving.

Trivia Before Riding a Water Buffalo Cart

Water buffalo cart sightseeing around the village. Actually, there was originally no culture of using water buffalo in Taketomi Island. In the past, when people from Taketomi Island went to Yubu Island adjacent to Iriomote Island to work in rice cultivation, they used water buffalo locally. After that, water buffaloes that finished their role due to mechanization came to Taketomi Island for tourism. Water buffaloes do hard work every day. Telling such a background to children will be a deep learning experience.

6. Ultimate Luxury. Why You Should Stay at "HOSHINOYA Taketomi Island"

Most tourists visiting Taketomi Island return to Ishigaki Island by the evening ferry.
The silence after the day-trippers leave is the figure of "Real Taketomi Island" worthy of being called the last original landscape of Okinawa. The quiet night village and the starry sky full of stars that can be seen because there are no streetlights can only be tasted if you stay.

For special anniversaries for couples or those who want to spend time relaxing without worrying about the surroundings with children, we strongly recommend staying at the resort "HOSHINOYA Taketomi Island" in the eastern area of Taketomi Island.

All rooms are independent villas, and a private space surrounded by red tiles and coral stone walls is promised. Not only can you spend time without worrying about children's crying or footsteps, but the Ryukyu tatami living room is safe even if small children fall. If you use room-in dining, you can enjoy the taste of the restaurant at the table in your room.
Letting go of the busyness of a day trip and experiencing "staying as if living on the island" will be a precious memory for the family.

7. Major Spots and Activities

Taketomi Island Village Stroll (Rental Cycle / Walking)

The village located in the center of the island is selected as a "Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings" of the country.
Features & Charm: White sand roads, red tile roofs, coral stone walls, and bougainvillea blooming all year round. A picturesque landscape spreads out wherever you cut it.
How to Enjoy: Rental cycles are best for efficient touring, but be careful as handles are easily taken by gravel roads. If walking, you can slowly admire the fine modeling of stone walls that you would miss on a bicycle and the flowers blooming in the back of the alleys.

Yugafu-kan (Visitor Center)

A facility introducing the nature and culture of Taketomi Island, located just a short walk from the port.
Features & Charm: Admission is free, and you can learn about the island's history, flora and fauna, and festivals.
How to Enjoy: It is correct to stop by "first" in sightseeing. Knowing the origin of the island changes the way you see the scenery. Since the air conditioning is working, it is also excellent as a heatstroke countermeasure for children and a shelter from rain.

Water Buffalo Cart Sightseeing

A synonymous activity of Taketomi Island where you leisurely tour the village while being swayed by the sound of Sanshin.
Features & Charm: Along with the pace of the water buffalo, the guide tells the history and life of the island.
How to Enjoy: It is a time to taste "the luxury of doing nothing". Each water buffalo has a name and personality, so please enjoy the gentle rhythm that proceeds while respecting their "break time".

Kondoi Beach

The largest white sand beach on the island. It is characterized by almost no waves and a blue that seems to suck you in.
Features & Charm: Surprisingly shallow, even small children can enter the sea with peace of mind. Also famous as a spot where friendly "island cats" gather.
How to Enjoy: Try walking aiming for the "phantom sandbar" that appears at low tide. You can take mysterious photos as if you are walking on the sea.

Kaiji Beach (Star Sand Beach)

A quiet beach with many shades of trees known for finding star-shaped sand.
Features & Charm: You can experience treasure hunting looking for "star sand" which is the shell of foraminifera.
How to Enjoy: The trick is to scoop up sand and look carefully. *Taking sand out from here is prohibited, but you can buy bottled star sand at the adjacent shop. Swimming is prohibited due to fast currents.

Nishi-sanbashi (West Pier)

An old pier protruding into the sea, which was once used to go to Iriomote Island for cultivation.
Features & Charm: Registered Tangible Cultural Property of the country. A highly transparent sea spreads out at the tip of the pier extending straight.
How to Enjoy: It is one of the best "sunset spots" on the island. The golden scenery that only guests can taste after day-trippers leave is exceptional. It is a connoisseur's way to spend time sitting at the tip of the pier and listening quietly to the sound of waves.

Niran God Stone

A megalith with a legend standing quietly near the West Pier.
Features & Charm: It is said that long ago, a god descended on this stone with seeds of five grains from "Niran (Niraikanai)" far away.
How to Enjoy: A place where you can feel the spiritual pillar of Taketomi Island, which was an agricultural island. It is not a flashy spot, but it is a sanctuary indispensable for knowing the faith of the island.

Nakasuji Well

A historic well located in Nakasuji Village on the south side of the settlement.
Features & Charm: In the era when there was no water supply, it was a precious source of fresh water that supported the lives of islanders.
How to Enjoy: It is still carefully maintained and functions as a place of worship. Please think about the history of how the people of the island have cherished water.

Nagomi Tower

An observation deck standing on a small rocky mountain (Akayama Hill) almost in the center of the village.
Features & Charm: A former landmark overlooking the red tile village of Taketomi Island.
How to Enjoy: Currently, you cannot climb the tower itself due to aging. However, you can feel the atmosphere of the village even from the foot of the hill where the tower stands. It is a classic spot for commemorative photos.

Akayama Observation Deck

A private observation deck on the roof of a souvenir shop right near Nagomi Tower.
Features & Charm: It is a precious place where you can overlook the village from above instead of the currently unclimbable "Nagomi Tower".
How to Enjoy: Pay the admission fee (about 100 yen) and go to the roof. The sea of red tiles spreading 360 degrees is a masterpiece. If you want to take a photo saying "This is Taketomi Island", this is the best.

If you try to go around all these spots in one day, the precious "Taketomi Time" will be ruined. The secret to success is a plan not to be greedy, such as "Water buffalo cart and village stroll in the morning, play earnestly at Kondoi Beach in the afternoon".

8. Taketomi Trivia: 5 Promises to Keep the Island Beautiful "Taketomi Island Charter"

When walking in the village of Taketomi Island, you will be surprised that there are extremely few vending machines and signboards, and it is beautiful like a painting wherever you cut it. This scenery is protected because there is the "Taketomi Island Charter" enacted by the islanders themselves in 1986.
Introducing the world-proud "Island Rules" to protect the treasures at our feet without being swallowed by the wave of tourism.

"5 Principles" to Protect

At the root of the charter are 5 simple and powerful words.

What We Tourists Can Do

This charter is a message not only to islanders but also to us visitors.
The manners mentioned in the first half of the article, "Do not walk in swimsuits" and "Do not enter shops while wet", are actually based on the spirit of "Do not disturb (maintain good morals)" of this charter.

In Taketomi Island, there is not a single huge hotel of major capital in the village. That is because there is a strong will of "Do not sell". The reason why we can take family photos against the background of this beautiful original scenery now is that the people of the island have chosen the "future of the island" rather than immediate profit from more than 30 years ago.

If you walk around the island after knowing this background, your eyes on the casual stone walls on the roadside and the carefully swept white sand roads may change a little.
