[2026 Guide] Firefly Watching in Ishigaki Island: How to Visit Banna Park Without a Tour! A Complete Guide for Families
🔄 Updated: 2026.03.01
📍 Banna Park
A poetic scene of spring to early summer in Ishigaki Island, Okinawa, Japan is the "carpet of light" woven by the Yaeyama Hime Firefly, the smallest firefly in Japan.
For families who want to visit the "Firefly Road" in Banna Park on their own without joining a tour, I have compiled a route so you won't get lost and precautions unique to traveling with children. This is a complete guide to avoid failure, based on real local conditions.

1. Basic Info: Firefly Watching in Ishigaki (2026 Forecast)
The Yaeyama Hime Firefly is characterized by its flickering flight near the ground. The viewing period and time are extremely limited.
- Best Season: Late February to early June. In 2026, the first peak is predicted to be March 18-26, and the second peak April 10-24.
- Appearance Time: A very short battle of about 30 minutes to 1 hour after sunset (around 19:00-20:00).
- Best Weather: A humid, cloudy day after light rain. They do not fly immediately after heavy rain.
2. [Local's Tip] The Golden Route: Arrive 45 Mins Before Sunset
If you try to arrive at 19:00 when the fireflies start glowing, the parking lot will be crowded, and you risk getting lost in the dark. I recommend arriving 45 minutes before sunset (18:15 if sunset is at 19:00) to enjoy the sunset view as well.
- 18:15 Arrive at Parking
Park your car while there are still spaces and get ready (toilet, etc.).
- 18:25 Start Walking & Check Route
Start walking the trail while it's still light. Parents can grasp the location of steps and stairs, dramatically increasing safety on the way back.
- 18:45 Magic Hour at D-Zone Observatory
Head to the observatory at the end of the Firefly Road. You can overlook the beautiful sunset of Nagura Bay and the silhouette of the bridge in Banna Park. Kids won't get bored while waiting for darkness.
- 19:10 Start Watching While Returning
Turn back from the observatory and retrace your steps. You can walk while watching the fireflies start to glow on the mountain slopes.
- 19:40 Return to Parking
Return to the car when the fireflies start to fade and others begin to get lost in the dark. You also avoid traffic jams.
3. Access & Directions: How Not to Get Lost
Banna Park is vast. If you go to the wrong place, you won't see fireflies. Please follow these steps.
Destination: "Nature Observation Plaza No. 2 Parking Lot"
Be sure to enter "Nature Observation Plaza No. 2 Parking Lot" (Banna Park West Entrance Area) into your car navigation system or Google Maps.
Correct Entrance from Parking to "Firefly Road"
- When you arrive at the parking lot, there is a building right next to it. The correct route is to pass by the side of the building, connecting the parking lot and the building in a straight line, and enter the forest.
*Note: The path that turns back towards the parking lot and goes down is wrong. If you see a "big bridge" as soon as you start walking, you are going in the opposite direction, so turn back.
- Follow the correct path, go down a gentle slope for about 20-30m, and stairs going down to the left will appear. This is the first and only corner. Turn left without hesitation.
- After that, go straight on the wooden path without turning, and climb the long stairs. Once you climb up, a paved road with gentle ups and downs continues. Fireflies appear along this paved road.
Tips for Finding Fireflies
After walking a bit, fireflies will start to appear in the bushes on the mountain side, not the valley side. If you are unsure where to look in the dark, the easiest way is to "follow people's gaze." There are clusters of light where others are staring intently.

4. 5 Rules Parents Must Know
Let's resolve questions and anxieties unique to families with children before entering the night forest.
- Can I use a stroller?
No. There are several stairs along the way, and the observation area has gentle slopes. Be sure to bring a baby carrier.
- Do I need a flashlight?
Not for the way there. You can walk without a light because there is still faint twilight when the fireflies glow. Turning on lights during viewing is strictly prohibited as fireflies are sensitive to light. Use it only to illuminate your feet after it gets completely dark on the way back.
- Can I use insect repellent spray?
Fireflies are insects too, so spraying strong repellent on site will drive them away. Using spray on site is a violation of manners and can cause trouble with local tour operators. Ideally, apply repellent secretly in the car or physically prevent bites with long sleeves and long pants.
- Is it okay to walk in sandals? Are there Habu snakes?
The road is well maintained and there are many people at this time of year, so you can walk in sandals. Excessive worry is unnecessary, but please promise your children "never to enter dark places where there are no people or into the bushes."
- Will children get scared or bored in the dark?
The twilight forest is a treasure trove of sounds. The flapping sound of fruit bats, the "meow" of peacocks, the "ho-ho" of Ryukyu Scops Owls, the "koro-koro" of Yaeyama Green Tree Frogs, etc. It is full of sounds. If you preview the sounds on YouTube etc. beforehand and give a quiz "What is that sound?" on site, the time in the dark will turn into fun entertainment.
Dinner Strategy After Viewing
If you break up around 20:00, the timing for dinner with children becomes strict. Izakayas in the city center often require reservations, but the fast food chain A&W (Ender) does not require reservations. It's affordable and gives you a tourist feel, making it a strong ally for families late at night.
5. Recommended Hotels for a Successful Family Trip
After a little adventure at night like firefly watching, choosing a base hotel is also important. We have carefully selected 3 recommended hotels to make your family trip to Ishigaki Island comfortable.
Fusaki Beach Resort Hotel & Villas
A representative family hotel in Ishigaki Island. Certified as a "Welcome Baby Inn," it is a reassuring resort that minimizes the burden on moms and dads, such as lending baby goods and providing baby food.
Highly Recommended!
Fusaki Beach Resort Hotel & Villas
Villas where you can take off your shoes, extensive kids' pools, and baby food support. The strongest resort for families with preschoolers.
Hotel Royal Marine Palace Ishigaki Island
Attracts with spacious guest rooms with separate bedrooms and living rooms, offering excellent cost performance. Right next door is "Funakura Park" along the sea with a lawn, which is an ideal environment for children to play freely.
Best Value!
Hotel Royal Marine Palace Ishigaki Island

Art Hotel Ishigaki Island (formerly Miyahira)
*Note: The original text mentioned "Miyahira" which is near the port. Assuming the user wants the Miyahira link as requested.*
Located in the center of Ishigaki Island, it is an overwhelmingly good location, a 1-minute walk to the bus terminal and remote island ferry terminal. Since it is right in the middle of the tourist street (Euglena Mall, etc.), there is no worry about making children walk too much for meals and shopping.
Bus Trip Key Station
Hotel Miyahira
1 min walk to Bus Terminal, right in front of Ferry Terminal. The strongest base for bus trips and island hopping. Equipped with a large public bath to heal travel fatigue.
6. Guided Tours to Secret Spots Are Also Fun
Adventure to find it yourself is fun, but if you want to enjoy it more deeply and safely, a "Firefly Viewing Tour" accompanied by a professional guide is also a wonderful option.
Guides who know the night forest of Ishigaki Island inside out not only know the best appearance points of the day but may also take you to private hotel spots. They also tell children about the ecology of fireflies and nocturnal animals and plants as an easy-to-understand "story".
Being able to spend time relaxing with transportation without worrying about driving in the dark or parking congestion is a unique benefit of tours. The carpet of light viewed with professional commentary should be a lifelong learning and moving experience for the family, not just watching.
Seasonal Tour
Ishigaki Island Firefly Viewing Tour (3/1 - 5/30)
Local guides will take you to the best spots of the day. Safe night driving with pick-up service. Perfect for children's learning.
