About one hour south from Ishigaki Port Remote Island Terminal. Hateruma Island — Japan's southernmost inhabited island — is a place everyone dreams of visiting at least once. The breathtaking beauty of Nishi Beach, known as "Hateruma Blue," and the night sky where the Southern Cross shines — this tiny island in the Yaeyama Islands, Okinawa, Japan is packed with overwhelming natural beauty. A true hidden gem and the ultimate off the beaten path destination for island hopping from Ishigaki Island.
However, Hateruma has the highest access barrier of any island in the Yaeyama chain. The real magic of Hateruma — too precious for a day trip — lies in its nights and mornings.
Hateruma Island is a tranquil island of untouched nature and sugarcane fields stretching to the horizon.

Securing your access is the single most critical key to a Hateruma trip.
The Hateruma route is extremely popular. Of the two ferry companies serving the Yaeyama Islands, only one (Anei Kanko) operates to Hateruma. With limited departures and seats, showing up at the counter on the day often means you won't get on. Even Taketomi Town Hall staff grumble that "you can't board without a reservation." The moment your travel dates are set, secure your ferry booking first.
When taking the high-speed boat or the larger vessel (Paikaji), the entire journey isn't rough. The truly intense rocking only kicks in during the final 20–30 minutes, after passing Iriomote Island. If you're traveling with kids or prone to seasickness, line up at the boarding area 30 minutes before departure and claim a back-row seat — the least affected by swells.
First Aviation operates a route connecting Ishigaki Airport and Hateruma Airport. Flights are limited, but the advantages — "absolutely zero seasickness" and "higher operation rate than ferries" — are enormous. If your budget allows, the air route is well worth considering. The short flight in a small aircraft is an attraction in itself.
You might think "It's a small island, bicycles should be fine" — but the island's center is elevated, meaning constant uphill-downhill cycling every time you head to the beach. Cycling with kids in midsummer heat is brutally tough. Village roads are narrow with wild goats wandering about, so renting a car and driving slowly and safely is the right call. Even for adults, it's surprisingly taxing — unless you're young and fit, a rental car is the sensible choice.

A trip to Hateruma Island is made or broken by advance preparation. Currently, the only accommodation on Hateruma bookable online is "Shima no Oyado Hatake no Mae." Secure your reservation alongside your hard-fought ferry ticket, and make your dream trip to Japan's southernmost point a reality.
