Proceeding along a single path cutting through the subtropical forest of Ishigaki Island, Okinawa, the view suddenly opens up, revealing a striking white architectural masterpiece. The only sounds are the presence of wildlife, the rustling of trees, and the distant sound of waves. Here, "silence" is the ultimate luxury.
It exists on the map. However, even among us locals living in Ishigaki, few know its true form. Quietly nestled in the Yonehara forest in the northwestern part of Ishigaki Island, Japan, lies "JUSANDI". This is not merely a luxury resort. It is a hidden sanctuary designed to unify you with the island.
In recent years, the number of accommodations claiming to be "private villas" has increased on Ishigaki Island. However, JUSANDI exists in a different dimension. I dare say this is the pinnacle of luxury in Ishigaki Island, Okinawa, Japan today.
Large resort hotels claiming luxury are overflowing with people, and other private villas cannot offer this level of "authentic luxury."
Why is such a special place rarely talked about? The reason is simple. They don't advertise in local newspapers, nor is it used as a wedding venue for residents. It doesn't enter our daily field of vision, so it doesn't become a topic of conversation.
On a vast site of 6,000 tsubo (approx. 20,000 sqm), there are only 5 guest villas. These all-suite villas are independently situated within the forest, so you never sense the presence of others. An untouched beach spreads out before you, with deep forest behind. It feels like owning a slice of the island's nature. This level of immersion, supported by perfect hospitality, is unrivaled on the island.
While staying secluded in JUSANDI is wonderful, the Yonehara area offers deep ways to enjoy the island known only to those in the know. Let me introduce the etiquette for stepping out of the luxury resort gates and touching the island's true face.
Along the roads around Yonehara, unmanned sales stands are scattered about. The currency here is the 100-yen coin. In season, island bananas with rich sweetness and passion fruits are lined up casually. Biting into fresh, ripe fruit before a high-end dinner—this contrast is the essence of a southern island trip.
The nearby juice shop "Papaya" is a must-visit. I recommend "Blend A" or "Blend B". Made only with fruit and sugarcane juice without any added sugar, I believe this taste is more delicious than any other juice on the island.
And if the line dies down, try talking to the old lady at the shop. Casual conversations, from back pain stories to the changing seasons, are the spice of travel. If you are lucky, you might encounter the old man squeezing sugarcane next door or boiling seawater with sugarcane bagasse to make salt.
JUSANDI's private beach is beautiful, but if you seriously want to see fish and coral, you should go to the nearby "Yonehara Beach". The prosperity of the coral and the abundance of fish are exceptional even within the island.
Also, the famous "Blue Cave" is right nearby. Honestly speaking, if you go expecting a "magical blue" like in Italy, you might be let down. However, if you go with the mindset of "sea cave exploration," you will be sufficiently satisfied with the vastness of the interior and the beauty of the light shining through the collapsed sections.
Usually, joining a tour is necessary for the Blue Cave, but guests staying here can enter from right next to it. As per the website, if the tide is low, you can walk there, and if you can swim, snorkeling there is easy. If you are comfortable swimming, I definitely recommend snorkeling there.
There are no convenience stores around JUSANDI. Move freely with a rental car.
Check Rental Cars on KlookThere is another ultra-high-spec villa on Ishigaki Island called "Seven Stars Resort Ishigaki". This is also a wonderful accommodation limited to one group per day, but there is one decisive difference. That is the "Private Beach Situation".
Seven Stars Resort is limited to one group per day, but the sea in front has a long coastline, and there are other hotels and villas nearby. Therefore, it is possible that there are already people when you go out to the beach.
On the other hand, due to JUSANDI's topography, the possibility of other hotel guests or tourists entering is almost zero. If you want to securely obtain "your own private ocean," JUSANDI wins.
The Yonehara area is far from the city center, and at night it is wrapped in pitch-black darkness. That is precisely why there is meaning in "staying" at JUSANDI.
At twilight, when tourists have returned to the city in their rental cars and silence has returned. Listen to the sound of the forest beginning its night breathing on the villa terrace.
At night, monopolize the starry sky with zero light pollution. The experience of looking up at the universe while floating in the pool without worrying about anyone's eyes can never be tasted elsewhere.
And morning. Wake up to the sound of birds and inhale the air of the forest wet with morning dew deep into your lungs.
Staying here is not just accommodation. It is a ritual to become part of Ishigaki Island's nature and retune yourself.
Only 5 groups in the world can have this experience. Please secure your place before reservations fill up.
Because JUSANDI is a hideaway, understanding access and the surrounding environment is crucial.
