When it comes to family-friendly spots on Ishigaki Island, Okinawa, Japan, Banna Park's "Fureai Children's Plaza" is the classic go-to. But it's so popular that weekends and peak tourist season get seriously crowded. Ever wished you could let your kids play freely without worrying about other families?
As it turns out, Banna Park has a "secret playground" that even locals have forgotten exists.
On Google Maps it's mysteriously labeled "Public Toilet" (technically accurate), with zero signage pointing to it… This is truly a "hidden gem known only to insiders" — and I'm breaking it down from a dad's perspective. A genuine off-the-beaten-path discovery in the Yaeyama Islands.
This place is a "hidden gem" simply because it's nearly impossible to find.
The upside? There's an extremely high chance you'll have the entire playground to yourself — zero crowds, private playground status!
I visited with my kids on both a weekday and Saturday in January 2026 — and sure enough, we had it completely to ourselves both times.

Getting here requires a bit of know-how.
❶ Enter from the North Gate (Recommended): Enter Banna Park from the "North Gate." *Warning: If you pull into the parking lot right at the entrance, the road doesn't connect through — don't make this mistake!
❷ Turn at the Insect Museum: Drive along the road and at the fork right in front of the "Insect Museum" building, turn deeper into the park (uphill direction). First-timers might wonder "Am I allowed to drive here?" — it's the road that passes the Butterfly Garden.
❸ Go to the Dead End: Follow the road to its end — the dead end IS the parking lot. That's your destination.
📍 View "Public Toilet C-5" on Google Maps*If entering from the West Gate, drive straight and you'll reach the Insect Museum junction.
The playground is compact but features a solid lineup of equipment safe for preschoolers through early elementary school.
Short and low — perfect for a first slide experience.
Two standard swings plus two "basket-type" swings — great for small children who can't yet sit stably on regular swings!
Classic rocking animals — a timeless favorite.
A small playhouse perfect for imaginative play and "house" games.
Surprisingly rare on Ishigaki — perhaps because the island already has so many sandy beaches, parks with sandboxes are few and far between.
The reason I recommend this spot so highly is that the surrounding area is packed with "island-style" sightseeing elements.
I'll be honest. Because it's a hidden spot with few visitors, wild boars frequently dig up the lawn and sandbox at night — you'll often see evidence of their visits.
Boars are timid and you're extremely unlikely to encounter one during the day, but droppings and flies can sometimes be present. If hygiene is a concern, simply avoid those areas.
Also, the restrooms are "squat-style" (Japanese-style) toilets only. If your child needs a Western-style toilet, use the Insect Museum facilities (1 minute by car) beforehand for peace of mind.
Playing at the bustling "Fureai Children's Plaza" is great, but spending time in a quiet forest, enjoying panoramic views while having the entire playground to yourselves — that becomes an irreplaceable family memory.
Don't be fooled by Google Maps labeling it "Public Toilet" — go discover this secret playground for yourself!
